What Juan Does at Star Building Services
Juan runs the operations side of Star Building Services as Owner and Co-Founder. His role owns four responsibilities that touch every account, every shift.
- Supervisor development. Star's supervisors are the layer between senior leadership and the crews doing the work. Juan owns their training, their certification standards, and the ongoing coaching that keeps supervisors effective as the company scales.
- Quality system infrastructure. The three-layer inspection structure, the checklists calibrated to each facility type, the Salesforce-based reporting system, and the escalation paths for finding-to-corrective-action all trace back to how Juan built the operations backbone.
- Facility maintenance trades network. The HVAC, painting, plumbing, electrical, and floor maintenance work Star delivers alongside janitorial requires subcontractor partnerships that Juan personally selects and vets.
- Cross-hub operational consistency. As Star expanded from Houston into Dallas, keeping standards consistent between the two hubs became Juan's specific responsibility.
How Star Building Services Was Built
Juan co-founded Star Building Services with Angelica Catano in September 2008. They started with a handful of Houston accounts and one operating philosophy: build a facility service company that competes on quality first, price second.
The partnership split into two complementary tracks from the earliest days. Angelica took client relationships and brand direction. Juan took the field, the crews, the training, the scheduling, the inspection systems, and later the subcontractor network for the trades work. Every account Star signed in year one had a defined inspection routine, a supervisor who owned it, and a set of standards documented well enough that a new hire could learn them on-shift.
Eighteen years later, that same operational discipline carries a five-star Michelin restaurant, hospital administration facilities, and dozens of other high-standard clients on a shared operations platform. Past clients include marquee organizations like NASA that have trusted Star with their facilities. Juan’s role has scaled with the company, but his underlying commitment has not: the customer will notice everything, so the systems have to catch what a person would miss.
Building the Operations System That Scales
Most commercial cleaning companies hit a wall around year three or four. The founder can no longer personally check every account, quality starts drifting, and the reputation that built the business erodes one missed shift at a time. Juan built Star’s operations system to solve that specific problem before it became one.
Three separate inspections run on every account, every month. The account supervisor does the first. The quality control lead does the second, with a stricter eye. The operations manager does the third, sometimes announced, sometimes not. All three inspections live in a Salesforce-based operations platform where the client account team, the supervisor, and the QC lead can see every finding and every corrective action.
Supervisor training is a separate track Juan owns directly. New supervisors go through structured onboarding, ride-along shifts with senior staff, and quarterly coaching sessions that keep them sharp as the company grows.
Running the Facility Maintenance Side
Alongside commercial cleaning, Star Building Services delivers a full facility maintenance program. Juan owns the trades side of that operation:

- Commercial electrical maintenance
- Commercial lighting maintenance
- Commercial floor maintenance
- Parking lot repair and maintenance
Each of those trades runs on subcontractor partnerships Juan personally selects and holds accountable. When a Star client needs work outside the cleaning scope, the coordination, quality standards, and inspection framework stay under Star’s operational leadership, not handed off to a third party the client has never met.

Community and Cultural Roots
The partnership that founded Star Building Services was built on the belief that a business should give back to the communities it comes from. That belief runs through the company as a value, not a marketing budget.
Star partners with Life Connection Mission on a water and community project for the Wayuu people in La Guajira, Colombia. The Wayuu are an indigenous community facing chronic water scarcity, and the project has brought clean water access, community infrastructure, and long-term support to a region most commercial partnerships never reach. Angelica leads the front-facing work on the project, and Juan’s role is making sure the partnership stays a company value rather than a founder-only initiative.
