A school called us at 4:00 PM on a Friday. A norovirus cluster had run through the cafeteria during lunch. Monday morning, 600 students would walk back through the same doors. By Sunday night, every cafeteria surface, every doorknob in the affected hallways, every shared lunch table, and every restroom touchpoint needed disinfection. They needed documentation for the parents and the school board. They needed it complete by Sunday night.

Both are EPA-compliant when paired with the right chemistry. Electrostatic application gives disinfectant droplets a positive electrical charge as they leave the sprayer. The charged droplets are attracted to negatively charged surfaces, wrapping around equipment, undersides, and shadowed areas that manual wipe-down cannot reach. Once a surface is coated, additional spray repels off instead of pooling. Coverage is even, dwell time is controlled, and one operator can disinfect what would take a manual crew of three to wipe.

It is not a replacement for standard cleaning. Trash still has to come out. Surfaces still have to be wiped of organic load before disinfectant can do its job. Floors still have to be vacuumed and mopped. Electrostatic is the deep disinfection layer that sits on top of a standard janitorial program, deployed on a recurring schedule, after a confirmed outbreak, or as a one-off for sterilization-sensitive turnover.

Disinfection looks easy from outside the work. Spray a chemical, walk away. The shortcuts are predictable.

Some vendors use a standard pump sprayer instead of a charged-droplet electrostatic system. The droplets fall by gravity, leaving shadowed and underside surfaces uncoated. From three feet away the room looks treated. The pathogen is still on the underside of the desk.

Others spray a generic disinfectant not on EPA List N. When the AHJ or your insurance carrier asks what you used, you cannot defend the cleaning. The certificate is worthless.

Others spray and walk away in 30 seconds. The dwell time required for the chemistry to actually kill cold and flu is two minutes. If the chemical is wiped off or evaporates before that window, the disinfection did not happen.
